Ellison has a long and distinguished sailing career inshore and offshore and has been a regular member of the sailing crew over the years of America’s Cup racing.

The building replaced a smaller wooden courthouse built about 1687.

The Colony House was constructed as part of the movement to bring

formal town planning to Newport, which until then had developed in

haphazard fashion.It was intended to help transform the Parade, as

Washington Square was then named, into an elegant public space in

keeping with the traditions

of English cities. The design of the Colony House is derived from the English Georgian style

popularized by the architect Sir Christopher Wren, but its floor plan follows the customary

layout of English town or guild halls, which often had an open marketplace on the ground floor

and civic offices on the second floor.

**Ida Lewis Light.... In 1853, Congress authorized the construction of a lighthouse on Lime Rock in Newport Harbor. Lime Rock is a limestone ledge

about 220 yds (200 m) from the shore. The original

lighthouse was a short stone tower with a 6th order

Fresnel lens and an oil-burning lantern. The light was commissioned in 1854. In the beginning, the lighthouse

keeper rowed from the shore daily to tend the light. In case of foul weather, the lighthouse keeper could stay

At 0811, 26 May 1954, while cruising off Narragansett Bay, the fluid in the port catapult exploded, setting off a series of secondary explosions which killed 103 crewmen and injured 201 others.

Bennington proceeded under her own power to Quonset Point, R.I.

On 26 May 2004 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, many dedicated a Memorial to those fallen sailors.
It was covered by the local media and approximately 900 former Bennington crewmembers, Air Group and Marine Detachment personnel came to remember the day!

The story goes that its first treasurer felt the chapel should be dedicated to a saint; the Irish-born missionary Columba, renowned for his teaching, healing, and miracles in sixth-century Scotland, was chosen.

Eisenhower's House

The Eisenhower House, is an historic, late nineteenth-century home,originally serving as the residence, for the Commandant of Fort Adams.

Newport architects, George C. Mason and Son, designed the house in 1873.

General Henry Jackson Hunt was the first in a long line of officers to live there.

The most famous military persona to reside there, was President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The house being so named.

President Eisenhower vacationed here during the late summer of 1958 and 1960.
At first, the president was quartered at the Naval War College on Coasters Harbor Island.
Golf was Ike’s passion however, and given Eisenhower House’s location near the Newport Country Club golf course, this became the president’s Summer White House.

The United States Navy transferred Fort Adams and Eisenhower House to the State of Rhode Island in 1964 for use as a state park.

Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by famed architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China Trade merchant and financier.

Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court.

The Griswold House currently houses restored rooms, galleries, a children’s art classroom, administrative offices, a lecture hall, and the Griffon Shop. The surrounding park and sculpture garden is used for many outdoor programs during the summer months.

William Ellery, the son of a gentleman of the same name, was born at Newport, on the 22d day of

December, 1727. His ancestors were originally from Bristol, in England, whence they emigrated to America

during the latter part of the seventeenth century, and took up their residence at Newport, in Rhode Island.

" During the year that the British army under General Piggot took possession of Newport, where they fortified themselves, and continued their head quarters for some time, the inhabitants sustained much injury in their property. Mr. Ellery shared in the common loss, his dwelling house being burned, and other destruction of property occasioned. " [colonialhall.com]

Mr. Ellery continued a member of congress until the year 1785, and indeed, through that year, when he

retired to his native state. Soon after, however, he was elected by congress, a commissioner of the

continental loan office, to which was subsequently added, by the citizens of Rhode Island, the office of chief

justice of their superior court, a station which he did not continue to hold long. On the organization of the

federal government, he received from General Washington the appointment of collector of the customs for

the town of Newport, an office which he retained during the remainder of his life

The Amica Marathon covers a rolling course on the scenic Newport and Middletown roads. Starting by the

water in downtown Newport, the course runs through some of the most scenic spots on Aquidneck Island,

including along historic Thames Street in downtown Newport, around Fort Adams State Park, past

Hammersmith Farm and the Newport Country Club, around scenic Brenton Point and Ocean Drive, past the

famous Bellevue Avenue Mansions, by beautiful ocean views along Easton’s Beach and Sachuest Beach,

through the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, along the Norman Bird Sanctuary, through the quiet

back country roads of Indian Avenue, and finishing at Easton’s Beach.

The Amica Marathon and UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon run together for the first 13.1 miles where the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon runners will finish and the Amica Marathon runners to continue with the marathon race.

The course is USATF certified and is a Boston Marathon qualifier.

The house was bought from the Berdys in 1945 ..[John and Ann T.]........but after only a year at # 28........the Berdys moved to 20 Fair st ......and lived next door to the Sullivans..

Mother worked on torpedos during the war.....Father was in the war........and then he opened a Jitney business in Newport.......Mother continued helping at St. Mary's across the street..[ at the church and in the convent]...and raising a family

And then there were the Old Times at 28 Fair St........with many Sullivans.....and friends and relatives.....and stories and memories...........and time passed......people came and went........yet so much was still familiar............unchanged even today ..

The church remained..........the convent emptied and moved............the school closed........some neighborhood houses were the same.........others were gone...........the corner gas station was no more........the A & P too.........the local tavern was no longer full of sailors........the backyard garage was torn down......the yard was different........but inside the house, it felt good

40 STEPS & The Cliff Walk

During Newport's Golden Age, the Forty Steps were a gathering place for the servants and workers from the nearby mansions. They were wooden steps at that time.............and ........it was here, that they would hold weekend dances and play the Irish songs and music that reminded them of home.

So the story goes....

This past Spring, with an old friend, on the Cliff Walk.......by Salve Regina......."The best place to walk.......Year'round "............especially with a friend.....

Local historians suggest that the first established paths along the Cliff Walk shore line were outlined by the local deer ... then the Narragansett Indians ... followed by the colonials who harvested whatever they could including the random salvage floating ashore from ship wrecks.

During the last half of the 1800s, the summer getaway for the wealthy New Yorkers spread from the center of Newport's harbor area to this then undeveloped coastal shoreline. The city was a fantastic center of Victorian extravagance in architecture and the social competition of millionaires benefiting from the industrial revolution. Many of the great mansions built during those times were ideally located on this scenic overlook of the Rhode Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Serious development of Cliff Walk started about 1880 and a number of the estate owners spent the next 50 years (to about 1929) improving the walk piece by piece.

The Great Depression threw the walk development into the deep freeze. Over the last 150 years the public and some of the wealthy estate owners have often clashed over access rights both along the shore and to the shore. Even today there are disputes at several points both along the walk and at public access points. Owners at times have moved paths to more dangerous areas; erected walls, fences and boulders directly across the Walk; planted bushes and trees to block or discourage access to the Walk; and posted dogs and even bulls to scare people away. Cliff Walk was protected by the combination of long term public use, the "Fisherman's Rights" granted by the Colonial Charter of King Charles II, and a passage in the Rhode Island Constitution that granted the public "rights of fishery and the privileges of the shore to which they have heretofore been entitled."

Now centuries of prior use have guaranteed the legal right of people to walk on the cliffs. The walk's construction was originally just a path along the shoreline. In some areas the public moved a few stones aside, some owners neatened their portions of the walk, while others built tunnels or bridges in a public spirited move to make the walk enjoyable to all.

In effect the walk is a public right of way over private property owned by the waterfront property owners. The walk historically was really a path or trail with many rustic components.

Prominent Newport citizen, African American entrepreneur, engaged in hospitality sector - restaurant and hotel business. Arrives Newport in the mid 1840's.

Owner of Sea-Girt House or hotel which fronts Bellevue Avenue. The building (five stories) has large stores on first floor and accommodations upstairs. The complex includes the Downing residence and restaurant. Amenities include dinners and game suppers in private parlors and accommodations for gentlemen boarders and families.
Operates confectionery and catering business; supplies the cottages - services include the providing of music.
Arson fire destroys original block on December 15,1860. Rebuilt - various physical changes have been made since Downing ownership. The block that bears his name still exists. Located on Bellevue, bordered by Liberty and Downing Streets.
One of 26 men and women who donate monies for the purchase of land to be known as Touro Park (1865). Downing name is inscribed on stone marker at park.
Member of the committee responsible for the Bellevue Avenue extension to Bailey's Beach.
Uses his influence towards the desegregation of Newport schools (1865); member of the equal rights movement in Rhode Island.
Dies at home, funeral held at Emmanuel Church, located on Dearborn Street.
Ardent advocate of the Negro's cause; works for the advancement of this race, and member of anti-slavery societies.
Learns restaurant business from his father - a proprietor of NYC restaurant and oyster house which is frequented by prominent people from all walks of life.
Makes important contacts through this establishment. Influenced by leaders of freedom movements who frequent this business; Downing joins anti-slavery movement at a very early age.
After the Civil War, Downing realizes increased exposure as advocate of equal rights and is sent to Washington, DC to protect interests of fellow Negroes during reconstruction.
The most prestigious Downing enterprise: in charge of the cafe/dining room of U.S. House of Representatives at the Capitol. This grants Downing the opportunity to influence and lobby policy-makers. Operates this concession for over a decade.
He married Serena Leanora de Grasse, November 24,1841, the daughter of George de Grasse - (considered to be the protègè of Aaron Burr).

It was 1930.... Edith and Maude Wetmore, daughters of Governor and Senator George Peabody Wetmore, who made his fortune in the China trade, provided the present site at 18 Market Square as a memorial to their parents. A special place, here in Newport.

They commissioned architect Frederick Rhinelander King to design and supervise the construction of the building in Georgian Revival style —later listed on the National Historic Register.

Signer of the Declaration of Independence

WILLIAM ELLERY, was forty-eight years old when he presented himself at the Second Congress on May 14, 1776. He was replacing Samuel Ward, a political ally who had died in March. Ellery was born in Newport, Rhode Island December 22, 1727, was a graduate of Harvard class of 1747. His father was deputy governor of Rhode Island. William, however, showed no interest in politics, law or much of anything else for that matter. He held a number of odd jobs earning just enough to raise a large family. His first wife, Ann Remington of Cambridge, died after fourteen years of marriage leaving six children; his second wife, Abigail Cary, gave him five more children. Twenty years would pass before he sought a career in law.

American Revolution...........Newport's Participation

During the American Revolution, Newport was the scene of much activity.

One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, William Ellery, came from Newport. He later served on the Naval Committee. In the winter of 1775 and 1776, the Rhode Island legislature put militia General William West in charge of rooting out loyalists in Newport, and several notable individuals such as Joseph Wanton and Thomas Vernon were exiled to the northern part of the state. In the fall of 1776, the British, seeing that Newport could be used as a naval base to attack New York (which they had recently occupied) took over the city. Because most of the population was pro independence, the British allowed them to leave. The city was repopulated with loyalists and British soldiers. For the next three years, the whole of the Narragansett Bay area became one large battlefield, with Newport being a British fortress.

In the summer of 1778, the Americans began the campaign known as the Battle of Rhode Island. This was the first joint operation between the Americans and the French after the signing of the treaty of alliance. The Americans based in Tiverton, planned a formal siege of the town. However, the French (wanting a frontal assault) refused to take part in the siege. This weakened the American position and the British were able to expel the Americans from the island. The following year, the British, wanting to concentrate their forces in New York, abandoned Newport.

In 1780, French troops sent by King Louis XVI commanded by Rochambeau landed in Newport. For the rest of the war Newport was the base of the French forces in the United States. In July 1781, Rochambeau was finally able to leave Newport for Providence to begin the decisive march to Yorktown, Virginia along with General George Washington. The first Catholic mass in Rhode Island was said in Newport during this time.

By the time the war ended (1783) Newport's population had fallen from over 9,000 (according to the census of 1774) to less than 4,000. Over 200 abandoned buildings were torn down in the 1780s. Also, the war destroyed Newport's economic wealth, as years of military occupation closed the city to any form of trade. The Newport merchants moved away, some to Providence, others to Boston and New York.

It was in Newport in 1791 that the Rhode Island General Assembly, acting under pressure from the merchant community of Providence, voted to ratify the Constitution and become the 13th state.

Faced with the possibility of the Newport jazz and folk festivals being canceled this year, original producer George Wein said yesterday he's in the process of taking back the reins. Wein, who began the legendary festivals in the 1950s, sold his production company to Festival Network in 2007, which put on last year's fests.

In January, Festival Network still owed money to the state of Rhode Island for last year's events. When the company defaulted and the Department of Environmental Management voided the contract, Wein stepped in.

"I couldn't let the festivals die," .

But all approvals have been secured, finally, as of late, and the venue is about set, and the show must go on...............

Mr. John Dixon Johnston , was quite the builder in Newport.........He designed and built over 200 houses in and around the city........He helped draft the city's first building codes.......He was an inventor..........An employer of many , many people.........A lumber mill owner.....and on and on......

From 1875 until the 1920's.....countless papers were saved....chronicling his work in the area........Boxes of drawings were kept and now saved......

Mike Sullivan visited Yesterday................His family bought 28 Fair Street in 1945..............sold it , in 1969.

He thinks they paid $5k for it ....sold it for $14k..........!

His dad was in the war.......He then came home......bought this house.......and started a Jitney Business in the city......
His mom, worked on Goat Island, during the war......working on torpedos....3 out of 7 kids, still home !

Mike remembered a house full of kids and family...he was the baby....neighbors were close and closer...family was everywhere in the city....grandma a block away....the Convent, was across the street....a gas station was at the corner.....grade school was next door, for all the Sullivans[St Mary's]........High School, just down the street ......Grandma's 80th birthday was HERE TOO!............there were neighbors sharing the back yard TOO...not Memorial Blvd, like Now........And the Harbor was in clear view from the Front Porch...[as we suspected]

the Face of Newport was Changed in the Late 1700's..................Because, on July 11, 1780, a French naval squadron under Admiral Chevalier de Ternay delivered General Comte de Rochambeau, his staff, and approximately 5,000 plus, French troops into the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island.

In the months that followed, Rochambeau and General Washington planned and directed combined operations, that explored, capturing British-held New York City. Which eventually led to a daring strategic campaign that captured the British General Cornwallis, and his army, at Yorktown, Virginia.

The Trinity Church...such a focal point in our city...such rich history

In 1731, Dean George Berkeley donated the first organ, whose wooden case, decorated with the Crown of England and the mitres of the archbishops of Canterbury and York, survives in place. The first organist was Charles Theodore Pachelbel, son of the famous German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel.
The church was used as a garrison church by the British Army in 1776–1778. Local oral tradition reports that George Washington attended services there in 1781. Le Chevalier de Ternay, the French admiral who died in December 1780, is buried in the churchyard. Also interred here is Dr. Sylvester Gardiner, who in 1753 purchased an immense tract of Maine wilderness where he founded what is now the city of Gardiner.
Historical architect, Norman Isham, restored several parts of the church in the 1920s. The church has been seen in several films, including Amistad and Evening.

"I couldn't let the festivals die," the 83-year-old impresario said yesterday from his home in New York. "That's my life, those two festivals."
Wein said Environmental Management, which operates Fort Adams State Park in Newport, granted his request to negotiate a contract to produce the festivals. His production team has said it will be holding the folk festival July 31-Aug. 2 and the jazz festival Aug. 7-9 at Fort Adams State Park.

Wein's return comes after last year's successful folk fest, which generated fresh buzz with indie-rock acts such as Cat Power and the Black Crowes and higher attendance than in previous years.

When the solo ended and Gonsalves collapsed in exhaustion, Ellington himself took over for two choruses of piano solo before the full band returned for the "Crescendo in Blue" portion, finishing with a rousing finale featuring high-note trumpeter Cat Anderson.
After that performance, pandemonium took over. Duke calmed the crowd by announcing, "If you've heard of the saxophone, then you've heard of Johnny Hodges." Duke's best known alto saxophonist then played two of his most famous numbers in "I Got it Bad, and That Ain't Good" followed by "Jeep's Blues." Still the crowd refused to disperse so Duke called for Ray Nance to sing "Tulip or Turnip." The festival's organizers tried to cut off the show at this point but once again were met with angry refusals to end this magical evening.
Duke told the announcer that he would end the show and wanted to thank the audience but instead announced he had a "very heavy request for Sam Woodyard in "Skin Deep," the number written by former Ellington drummer Louis Bellson. This drum solo feature was the final number featured, followed by a farewell from Duke over "Mood Indigo". In his farewell, he thanked the crowd for the "wonderful way in which you've inspired us this evening." He then finished with his trademark statement, "You are very beautiful, very lovely and we do love you madly."
With that, the historic show concluded.

The Duke Revived, 1956

The Duke and his band had slipped in popularity with the rise of bebop, the jazz style which was developed by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk, among others. Many big bands had folded completely by the mid-1950s, but Duke had kept his band working, occasionally doing shows in ice-skating rinks to stay busy. The Duke Ellington Orchestra had done some European tours during the early 1950s, and Duke was chiefly supporting the band himself through royalties earned on his popular compositions of the 1920s to 1940s.
Duke and his orchestra arrived to play at the Newport Jazz Festival at a time when jazz festivals were a fairly new innovation. The crowds in those days were quite sedate compared to the typical concert-going crowd of today. The first few numbers, including "Black and Tan Fantasy" and "Tea for Two" were played without a few of the band's members as they were unable to be found at the start of the show.
After some performances by other players at the festival, the remainder of the band was located and the real performance began. Duke led off with "Take the 'A' Train", followed by a new composition of Duke and Billy Strayhorn's which was a three-part suite. The first movement was entitled "Festival Junction". The second was called "Blues to Be There" and the final movement was named "Newport Up". This suite was intended to be the showstopper, but the reception was not as enthusiastic as was hoped.
Following the Newport Suite, Duke called for Harry Carney's baritone saxophone performance of "Sophisticated Lady". Then the orchestra played "Day In, Day Out". Following this, Duke announced that they were pulling out "some of our 1938 vintage"---a pair of blues, "Diminuendo in Blue" and "Crescendo in Blue," joined by an improvised interval, which Duke announced would be played by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves.
Ellington had been experimenting with the reworking for several years before the Newport performance; a release of one of his Carnegie Hall concerts of the 1940s presented the two old blues joined by a wordless vocal passage, "Transbluecency," but in time he chose to join the pair by a saxophone solo, handing it to Gonsalves, experimenting with it in shorter performances before the Newport show, where Ellington is believed to have told Gonsalves to blow as long as he felt like blowing when the solo slot came. It came after two choruses of an Ellington piano break at what was formerly the conclusion of "Diminuendo in Blue."
As performed at Newport, the experiment ended up revamping the Ellington reputation and fortune for the rest of Ellington's life.
